African Liberation in the Americas: A Webinar on Haiti, Brazil, Colombia and Venezuela

In anticipation of the global events marking African Liberation Day, The Black Alliance for Peace is hosting African Liberation Day in the Americas, a webinar exploring the parallel struggles and inter-connected histories of people of African descent throughout the Americas. Drawing on the collective knowledge of Black activists and academics from Haiti, Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, and the United States, the webinar will examine how forms of anti-Black repression extend across the geographic, national, and linguistic divisions of the hemisphere – only to be resisted by a shared culture and tradition of African revolt and autonomy.

Haiti is critical to this project of the African Americas and it is the entry point for The Black Alliance for Peace’s expanded work in the Americas. Haiti has been both ground zero for the European colonial and the US neocolonial projects in the hemisphere. It is also key to the liberation and transformation of the Americas’ region as part of the global anti-colonial and Pan-African revolutionary movements. Yet this dialectic of white repression and Black revolt is also crucial to our understanding of current conditions in Brazil, Columbia, Venezuela, and the United States, countries that are home to some of the largest African populations outside of the continent. As such, African Liberation Day in the Americas will examine contemporary experiences of racial discrimination and the maintenance of whitesuperamcy, police and military violence, and labor exploitation and class repression, grounding these practices in the history of settler colonialism, capitalist expansion, and imperial rule.

Given the recent wave of state terrorism directed against Black people throughout the region, African Liberation Day in the Americas takes on a particular urgency.  Please join the Black Alliance for Peace on Saturday, May 22nd at 11am (EST), to learn more about African liberation in the Americas.
