This year’s commemoration of African Liberation Day occurs at a painful moment. Too many African lives have been claimed by Covid-19. Nevertheless, while a global pandemic presents challenges, our fight for African liberation cannot be stopped! African Liberation Day 2020 moves forward!

This year has reminded us that in more ways than we can count, Africans born and living in countries all over the world endure oppressive conditions that cause widespread poverty, illness and death. Africans need a remedy, and they need it now. The All-African People’s Revolutionary Party (A-APRP) has been steadfast in its assertion that the solution to so many of our problems can be found in Pan-Africanism: the total liberation and unification of Africa under scientific socialism. In fact, the Party devotes all its resources and energy to achieving that objective.

KNAC Statement on Occasion of African Liberation Day

2019-05-25 by KNAC Leave a Comment

ENGLISH

25/05/2019

STATEMENT ON THE OCCASION OF AFRICAN LIBERATION DAY

The Kwame Nkrumah Pan-African Centre (KNAC) today joins Africans worldwide in marking  African Liberation Day 2019.

African Liberation Day is rooted in the 1958 Conference of Independent African States, convened in Ghana by Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah as the first Pan-African gathering on African soil. The eight participating countries – Egypt, Ethiopia, Libya, Tunisia, Liberia, Sudan, Ghana and Morroco declared 15th April, the day of the Conference, as African Freedom Day. This was later changed to 25th May 1963 when the Organisation of African Unity was founded. The day has since been celebrated each year.

In December last year, KNAC in collaboration with the Pan-African Federalist Movement convened more than 500 Pan-Africanists including from the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe and North America to mark the 60th Anniversary of the 1958 All-African People’s Conference. The theme for the Anniversary was “Africa Must Unite: the mission for our generation”. This captured the imperative for the political and economic unification of African and Caribbean states, that would include African people worldwide. We also affirmed the growing recognition by all that African unity is the pre-requisite to the prosperity of all Africans wherever they are.

Today, as we mark African Liberation Day, we reflect on the works of our Pan-African heroes – the likes of Edward Blyden, Marcus Garvey, Kwame Nkrumah, George Padmore, W. E. B. Du Bois, Cheikh Anta Diop, Amilcar Cabral, Sekou Toure, Julius Nyerere, Haile Sellassie, Gamal Nasser, Al-haj Malik Shabaaz (Malcolm X), Martin Luther King Jr. and many others. While doing so, we revisit the imperative for our economic liberation, which remains unaccomplished, and can only come about through unity. Writing in I Speak of Freedom,  Kwame Nkrumah declared, “I believe strongly and sincerely that with the deep-rooted wisdom and dignity, the innate respect for human lives and the intense humanity that is our heritage, the African race united under one federal government will emerge not as just another world bloc to flaunt its wealth and strength but as a Great Power whose greatness is indestructible because it is built not on fear, envy, or suspicion nor won at the expense of others but founded on hope, trust, friendship and directed towards the good of all mankind”.

By African Unity, we mean the original call by the founding leaders namely a Union Government with a central military command, a common economic plan, and a unified position on international affairs. With a combined population of more than 1.5 billion people, Africans will form one powerful nation in control of her people’s destiny, proud of her heritage and spiritually fortified with a common purpose.

KNAC acknowledges the statements of solidarity from Pan-African Organisations, activists, freedom fighters, and all well-wishers on the occasion of African Liberation Day. Let us dedicate ourselves to mobilise and organise towards our ultimate goal of the economic and political unification of Africa.

God bless Africans at home and abroad!

God bless the African Nation that must be!

Long Live African Liberation Day!

Samia Nkrumah

President
